The Girls Varsity Golf Team kicked off their 2019 season the same way they wrapped up their 2018 State Championship winning season, with a 1st place finish. Teeing of Saturday in the North Gwinnett Invitational Golf Tournament at Bear’s Best Golf Course, the team looks a little different than last year’s team, with a new coach, new players, and new philosophy. The ultimate goal, however, remains the same – winning it all.
This year’s team features a unique mix of experience and youth. Senior Michelle Cao, junior Aya Kakizaki, sophomore Erica Scutt, and freshman Lauren Siegel have already established great team chemistry. The only question was whether they could make that chemistry work for them in a competitive environment. The answer is a resounding YES!
The Lady Titans were led by Michelle Cao, who came in with a team best score of 75, which was good for a runner-up finish in the tournament’s individual competition. The team score of 244, which combines the lowest three of the players’ four scores, was three strokes clear of the field.
The players were excited to have won their very first event of the season, but were quick to acknowledge to each other they are capable of better focus and better execution. That attitude reflects the philosophy of Coach Silver, the team’s new head coach. “Our approach is to focus on the process, not the results. If the players do that, the result will take care of itself.”
If the team’s performance in the North Gwinnett Invitational is any indication, it looks like another promising season ahead for the Girls Varsity Golf Team.
Congratulations, Lady Titans!
